Jennifer Piel, M.D., J.D., is among the winners of the AMA’s 2017 Excellence in Medicine Leadership Awards. The awards were presented at the AMA Foundation Excellence in Medicine Awards program on June 9 during AMA’s annual meeting in Chicago. Piel is director of the Disruptive Behavior Evaluation Clinic at the VA Puget Sound, Seattle Division, and associate program director of the psychiatry residency training program at the University of Washington. The Leadership Awards are presented annually to medical students, residents, fellows and early-career physicians who exhibit outstanding leadership in community service, education, public health, or organized medicine. The program provides leadership development training for these recipients to further strengthen their efforts of advancing health care in America.

Eliot Sorel, M.D., chaired the Elisabeth Pilkington Ratiu Mental Health Award Jury, which selected Prof. Mircea Miclea of Babes Bolyai University of Cluj Napoca, Romania., as the award’s first recipient. The ceremony took place in Romania on June 3.
